Lawless Rothman

November 30, 2017 by Daniella Henry

Released last month as Lawrence Rothman's debut album, "The Book of Law" immediately puts you in a late 70's-laced dreamlike state. The St. Louis raised/L.A.-based artist's unique deep bellow effortlessly releases melancholy and nostalgia that you'll want to play on repeat.

The mark of a classic album is when you purposefully don't put it on shuffle, because you can tell from the first note that there's a purpose to the order. Almost trance-like, we got through listening to the album twice on a loop without noticing. We take that as a good thing. It just feels right.

The Good: Songs like "Your Kiss Tastes Like Dope" will make you forget all the bad shit that happened in your love life in high school/college/your 30s/right now, and make you think it was something straight out of the ending to "10 Things I Hate About You." The list of collaborators on this album is impressive, with the likes of bass player Pino Palladino (on D'Angelo's Voodoo and Black Messiah) and legend Kim Gordon.

The Bad: Rothman has been through some shit, and the lyrics on songs like "Walking My Tears Across Manhattan" pull you in to the point that if you listen too hard, you'll be dunking Oreos into whiskey pretty soon.

The Ugly: From his website, it seems like his next shows are in Europe and the West Coast, but we hope with the new album, Rothman will be back on the East coast soon.
